Foundations-1F: Philosophical Issues in Psychology

The Philosophy of Psychology unit explores the foundational questions that shape our understanding of the mind, behaviour, and human experience. By integrating philosophical inquiry with psychological science, the unit examines critical issues such as the mind-body relationship, free will and determinism, consciousness, and the nature of self and identity.

Students engage with diverse perspectives, from historical frameworks to contemporary debates, gaining a deeper understanding of the conceptual and ethical dimensions of psychology.

This unit also emphasises the role of values, ethics, and cultural contexts in shaping psychological research and practice. Through discussions on topics like mental illness, epistemology, and the integration of philosophy and psychology, students develop critical thinking skills and an appreciation for the interdisciplinary nature of the field.

Designed to challenge assumptions and encourage reflection, the unit equips students with the tools to navigate complex questions and contribute thoughtfully to the study and practice of psychology.
